The beauty tip I am about to talk about may seem obvious, but I never took it seriously until working with top Dutch makeup artist Ingrid Burger. We worked at the start of the year on a shoot in Cape Verde. Our first encounter was at the Schiphol airport in Amsterdam to catch our flight to Africa. It was 4am and her skin was glowing, naturally I put it down to great products. Throughout the week we had various call times and many early morning starts. She told me stories about her children, their ages and how long she has worked in the fashion industry. But the maths didn’t add up to the appearance that was in front of me, clearly not a touch of cosmetic surgery had been near her skin either. By day four working together I just had to ask her what her secret was. She told me that from a young age her mother told her to eat a piece of fruit every morning for breakfast if she wanted to be beautiful. Ingrid is nearly 50, but with the skin of a woman in her 30’s. As you can imagine I quickly added fruit into my breakfast regime everyday since then.
The science behind it is as a result of the antioxidants and vitamins from fresh fruits ( dried fruit or from a tin does not count). Mainly you want to target berries, particularly blueberries which are full of antioxidants. They help to transport oxygen to the skin cells and around the body which is vital for cell repair. This added increase of circulation thus leads to an extra glow to your skin. They are also great for people who are susceptible to acne as they counteract with the hormones that tend to produce breakouts. I literally eat them every day with natural yogurt. Acidic fruits like apples, oranges and pineapple are also great.
In general as women we spend so much time and a lot of money on beauty products, skincare treatments and makeup to have a glowing complexion but we can easily forget the basics. What we put into our bodies is just as important. Try introducing a piece of fruit at breakfast for the next six weeks and see what you think. Trust me you will see a difference and it will probably be the most cost effective beauty technique you have ever used!
