The Blanket Scarf

The Blanket Scarf

The blanket scarf has gained great attention this season. Most notably through the effects of Burberry’s poncho’s which have been swept up by celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Olivia Palermo.  I’ve had a number of emails lately over this trend, mainly to create a casual yet chic look using a blanket scarf or “Blarf” as its been recently nicknamed. For today, I’ve chosen a colourful approach which is bright and on trend with cobalt blues. There are a number of colours you can try when it comes to working a blanket scarf. Red looks extremely effective also, but if in doubt stick to a monochrome black and white look which you can’t go wrong with. 🙂

Primark fashion

Today’s Blarf example is a brilliant bargain find from Primark for €7/£6!  It’s reversible with a beautiful houndstooth print on the other side making it ideal to pair with the most simple outfit. I find the easiest and most flattering way to style this kind of scarf is to drape it over the shoulders and part of your back. It means your chest area is not too covered which works well for those who are big busted nor does it add too much bulk to your frame. Depending on the size of the scarf you choose, you can drape it over your body like a cape and belt it around your waistline. This is a common look I’ve seen on mannequins in many stores, however, depending on your body shape it may not necessarily be the most flattering particularly for apple and pear shapes as belts may sit unevenly and make you appear bigger than you are.

For styling the look, I opted for my blue boucle blazer which was a similar shade to the scarf. I kept the rest of the look quite minimalist with just a statement tee to create a nice edge to this outfit. You can pair this kind of scarf with a number of looks such as skinny jeans, leather look leggings and a fitted dress, or as seen above. My look is semi fitted as my skirt has an a-line kick to it but it’s balanced out by a fitted top half along with tights.

Winter Fashion Trends

For accessories, I paired the look with my faux ponyskin handbag which I’m using a lot lately, along with my fedora from Primark which has an unusual biker trim to it. For shoes I opted for my high heeled ankle boots I’ve had for some time now. Together they create a perfect cosy but chic Winter look that will work for day or night.
