The Brooklyn Bridge has always been on my list of places to visit. I’ve never had the chance to properly in the past because of schedules whenever I was in New York. My Grandmother loved New york, she worked there for over ten years as a nurse after she had been widowed. She was the type of woman who if she wanted to do something she just did it. In her 60’s she went all around America on a Greyhound bus all by herself to every single state! Nothing seemed to phase her, she’d work it out and just do it as opposed to dwelling on something. It wasn’t until years after her nursing days that she met my grandpa Dennis and as the fairy tale goes she got remarried here in New York in St Patricks Cathedral aged 73, and instead of that “something blue” she opted for something green – a pale green dress in fact representing her Irish roots!
They both moved back to Ireland soon after they married and I remember one day asking her what was her favourite location out of everywhere she’d been, she said: “driving over the Brooklyn Bridge in daylight, when the sun shines the whole city sparkles and no matter how bad your day has been you think you are capable of anything.. as if the city is greeting you.”
On my way back from Brooklyn I took a cab to go back into Manhattan – it was exactly how she explained it would be. I felt like I was seeing New York for the first time all over again from a totally different view. On my last day I had two hours free before the airport so I managed to go to St. Patricks Cathedral and finally see the aisle she would have walked down all those years ago too. It was certainly nostalgic but the reason I’m sharing this story is because it just gave me such a stark reminder of how important it is to just go for things. There are times we all doubt ourselves, we use silly things like age or time or insecurities to talk ourselves out of doing things. Many write wishlists and bucket lists and years go by they are still just that, lists. And while money doesn’t grow on trees, from time to time it is important for ourselves to just embrace things and not let time pass you by.
Today’s outfit was just a simple look as I was heading to a meeting so I opted for practicality and comfort. A cold shoulder dress, my black block heel ankle boots I lived in while I was in New York and my baker hat which has been possibly my most use purchase since September!
